PURSUING LASTING CHANGE
Bias, Behaviors, and Belonging
Belonging begins here
The region’s premier nonprofit conference returned in a bold way
– offering a full day of optimism, ideas, inspiration, and learning. Together, we explored our shared mission of Pursuing Lasting Change as we challenged ourselves to move beyond our divisions and begin building thriving organizations and communities.
AWARDS presentation & Celebration
The ChangeMakers Awards celebrated how our nonprofit sector improves the quality of life in our society daily. The Center for Nonprofit Excellence is pleased to elevate the contributions made by nonprofit organizations in five areas: Collaboration, Inclusion, Governance, Vision, and Leadership. The first four awards are presented to nonprofit organizations, while the Leadership award is presented to an individual.

Western culture has long been defined by our separations. According to john a. powell, co-founder and chair of Perception Institute, founder and Director of the Othering & Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley, and someone who is closely associated with the work of bridging and targeted universalism - the reality is that we’re deeply connected to each other and must challenge ourselves to rediscover that connection.
All human relationships are marked by conflict, which, if left unaddressed, can become a crisis. In this session, leaders will learn about the science of why dignity matters, how to uphold it, protect it, and repair it, and how to use dignity to transform conflict into connection.
Perception Institute has spent more than a decade engaged in empirical research to identify how mission driven organizations can motivate people to join their efforts. In this session, leaders will learn how to share their vision and work, to inspire others, and to move towards common goals. To achieve our goal of genuine and lasting change, we need to bring people with us on the journey.
Toward Solutions for Change:
Overriding Bias Across Systems
The challenge many organizations face is to understand what bias is and how and where it operates in their work both externally and internally. In this session, leaders and stakeholders can actively incorporate interruption techniques into personal reflection, workplace interactions, and basic business systems to reduce bias and its impact, and work towards communities where all identities belong.
A new approach to the ChangeMakers Conference, a new partnership
This year’s conference was produced in partnership with Perception Institute, which is led by Louisville’s own Sadiqa Reynolds. Perception Institute inspires people to live their values.
From their website:
Most Americans believe in racial and gender equality and reject discrimination in any form. Yet, stereotypes embedded in our brains, shaped over time by history and culture, can lead us to view the world through a biased lens and behave contrary to our deeply held egalitarian values…. Perception Institute engages in and translates the best mind science research on identity differences into solutions that can be applied to everyday individual and institutional interactions. We design research, workshops, and cultural products that advocate for systemic and societal remedies to discrimination.
